Overview: In March of 2020, Kenya went into lock-down. Government authorities took extreme measures to prohibit the spread of COVID 19 including closing all schools. For the majority of children in Kenya, this shut down has been disastrous. School was the source of the main meal of the day. School was a place of hope. School was a place of safety from the dangers of the slums, of overcrowded living conditions, of becoming pregnant, of being sexually abused, of being idle and recruited into gangs, drugs, alcohol and thievery.
Communication objective: Capture images and personal stories of the reality of life in urban slums during the closure of schools.
Output by SPERO: Images and stories prepared for UNICEF for internal communication and media, and distributed to international media.
